WayForward Resources (formerly Middleton Outreach Ministry) operates as a Food Pantry Garden as well as a teaching garden. As an Affiliate of Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens, they are managed and run by volunteers and supported by several businesses and groups throughout the community including Middleton High School, Fiskars, and Willy Street Co-op.
Our flagship Family Garden provides 15 to 20 food pantry clients with fresh picked produce. Clients help with the work and then take home whatever is in season. Last year that amounted to nearly 7,000 pounds.
The Family Garden provides the pantry guests with an escape from the everyday stressors as well as fresh vegetables for their families. The children participate which is especially rewarding for us as they are getting an early start on a nutritious and life-long pastime. We make sauerkraut and refrigerator pickles which the kids really enjoy.
WayForward volunteers are responsible for providing our gardens with seeds and plant starters including broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage, tomato, peppers, etc. Around 15,000 plants will go to all the Madison area food pantry gardens.
An additional WayForward garden contains about 100 hills of watermelons, resulting in about 3000 pounds of highly desirable melons each year.
